Babcock launches transformative digital platform to connect shipbuilding, fleet operations and support
Babcock has launched Pelorus, a transformative digital platform designed to connect the build, operation and support of maritime assets across their entire lifecycle.
The whole-life digital management platform provides real-time insight and intelligence across individual vessels, fleets and programmes, creating a connected ecosystem of information that supports assets from initial design and construction through to operational deployment and long-term sustainment. Already deployed, in selected Babcock managed marine build and support environments, the platform can also be adapted for use across other defence and critical infrastructure domains.
As momentum builds behind Hybrid Navy concepts, including our own ARMOR Force (Autonomous and Remote, Maritime Operational Response Force) approach, we’re advancing complementary digital support systems that support legacy fleets, new-to-service warships and future hybrid and autonomous capabilities within a single connected platform.
Coordinated through a central command centre, it synchronises data from multiple systems and sources, enabling programme teams, operators and support organisations to make faster, data-driven decisions. By bringing together previously disparate information, the platform helps improve programme performance, enhance operational readiness and optimise through-life support.
As navies around the world pursue major recapitalisation and modernisation programmes, Pelorus offers a scalable, digital solution that connects people, processes and systems, providing a rich and continuously evolving picture of asset performance throughout its lifecycle, redefining how the modern navy manages its assets.
The platform has been developed with partners to address a number of key trends shaping the future of naval capability, including increasing demands for fleet readiness and availability, digital shipbuilding transformation, the growth of artificial intelligence, analytics and digital twins, and the need to modernise and extend the life of existing fleets.
Sir Nick Hine, Chief Growth Officer and Chief Executive – Marine, Babcock said: “The future of maritime capability depends on the ability to connect design, production, operational and support data into a single digital environment. Pelorus provides our customers with a powerful whole-life view of their assets, enabling better decisions, improved performance and greater operational availability.
“By creating a connected digital thread from build to support, we can help navies and maritime operators accelerate delivery, optimise readiness and unlock greater value throughout the lifecycle of their assets.”
The launch reinforces our continued investment in digital innovation and supports our ambition to deliver smarter, more connected defence solutions that enhance customer capability and mission success.
Siemens and NVIDIA are advancing Industrial AI
Siemens and NVIDIA are putting AI to work in product design and production – and helping build the AI factories that power it. Ten months after expanding their partnership at CES, the companies are delivering new products and reporting measurable results from joint projects.
“Industrial AI gives our customers a once-in-a-century opportunity to do what was never possible before,” said Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens. “Together with NVIDIA, we are building the Industrial AI Operating System, combining their accelerated computing and AI platforms with our leading hardware, software, industrial AI and data. This will help customers make products smarter, factories more productive and infrastructure more efficient – with the safety, security and reliability industry demands.”
“AI is driving a new industrial revolution, transforming every industry and redefining what we can build and how we build it,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Together with Siemens, we are reinventing how chips are designed and AI factories are built – and putting that intelligence to work in the physical world, powering a new era of autonomous engineering and manufacturing.”
Designing the chips that enable AI
AI starts with chips. To deliver more computing power faster, Siemens and NVIDIA have developed AI agents that automate complex chip design tasks and verify their results using Siemens’ electronic design automation (EDA) tools and NVIDIA AI infrastructure. The latest application extends this work to electrical and thermal analysis.
As chipmakers stack components to build more powerful chips, heat becomes harder to manage and can limit performance. With Siemens’ AI-driven electrothermal workflow, engineers can predict where heat will build up and how it will affect a chip’s performance before manufacturing begins. AI agents plan and run the analysis across multiple engineering tools within Siemens’ EDA software portfolio. NVIDIA CUDA-X libraries accelerate the thermal simulation workflow, helping engineers evaluate design alternatives faster. The workflow helps engineers to set up multiple tools in under five minutes instead of several days and enables 50 times more design exploration than manual methods.
Building the infrastructure powering AI
AI factories turn data and energy into AI at scale. NVIDIA DSX defines the reference architecture for the AI factory. As a leading data center infrastructure provider, Siemens provides the electrical distribution, protection, automation and controls to the NVIDIA DSX architecture – from the grid connection to the AI rack – and the digital twin that customers use to design, build and operate the facility as one system.
Siemens, NVIDIA and ecosystem partners have introduced the NVIDIA DSX Vera Rubin Reference Design for the U.S. and European markets. These repeatable architectures translate NVIDIA DSX requirements into deployable power and controls infrastructure, bringing together power, cooling and compute requirements and adapting them to local standards to simplify planning, construction and operation. Siemens and Delta co-designed prefabricated, factory-tested electrical power modules that can reduce data-center time to market by up to 50 percent.
Siemens’ physics-based digital twin, developed with NVIDIA and built using NVIDIA Omniverse libraries, helps operators plan and optimize this infrastructure as one system. Even before construction begins, the digital twin shows how a facility will interact with the grid, where cooling could fall short and how noise from continuously operating cooling equipment could affect neighbors. Operators can identify and address potential bottlenecks, evaluate infrastructure tradeoffs that affect tokens per watt, and test noise-reduction measures before committing capital – helping them meet local requirements and build community trust. The digital twin can also provide utilities with additional visibility to inform grid-connection assessments. During operation, connected telemetry and simulation can help operators identify opportunities to improve cooling and electricity use.
Turning AI into real-world impact
Putting AI to work in industry means helping engineers develop better products faster and manufacturers run more resilient, efficient operations. To enable engineers to test more designs before building prototypes, Siemens combines its Simcenter simulation software with NVIDIA accelerated computing and NVIDIA CUDA-X libraries to accelerate supported simulation workloads. The package can run without an internet connection, keeping sensitive data on site. Simulations run up to ten times faster. Simcenter PhysicsAI uses models trained on simulation data to predict design performance up to 1,000 times faster than traditional simulation; local AI agents further accelerate simulation tasks, reducing manual effort and helping engineers iterate faster.
Siemens’ electronics factory in Erlangen serves as the blueprint for adaptive manufacturing. Here, Siemens and NVIDIA have developed and piloted AI applications that coordinate production tasks and prepare quality inspections. Intelligence Center X and Siemens’ operations software bring together data and workflows from enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and the shop floor. AI agents built with the NVIDIA Factory Operations Blueprint (FOX) use this information to coordinate and optimize production planning, helping manufacturers adapt faster to changing conditions and cut costs by up to 20 percent.
For automated optical inspections, Process Preparation X uses Siemens’ Digital Twin and NVIDIA Cosmos Data Factory to create training data, eliminating a critical bottleneck in preparing quality inspections – the need to build physical prototypes – and helping to shorten time to market by up to 40 percent.
Manufacturers can also test production changes before implementing them. Digital Twin Composer – built using NVIDIA Omniverse libraries – connects virtual factory models to real operational data, and AI-powered factory scheduling allows teams to optimize production based on component availability, equipment maintenance and other variables. An initial customer deployment increased throughput by 20 percent. This implementation brings the NVIDIA Factory Operations Blueprint (FOX) to life through Siemens Intelligence Center X for operations.

A New Frontier: How GE Aerospace Is Using the World’s Fastest Supercomputer to Help Design an Open Fan Engine for the RISE Program
July 24, 2024 | by Dianna Delling
If every one of the world’s approximately 8 billion people were to complete 60 calculations per minute — arithmetic problems, for example — and continue nonstop, it would take them four years to accomplish what Frontier can do in just one second. Operating since May 2022 at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the world’s fastest supercomputer can perform more than a quintillion (10 to the 18th power) calculations per second, making it the world’s first exascale machine. It’s billions upon billions of times quicker than the human mind, giving it the power to synthesize and analyze incredibly large quantities of data.
All this makes Frontier an invaluable tool for scientists investigating the most complex questions of our time. And it has been a game changer for GE Aerospace engineers racing to develop the revolutionary Open Fan engine architecture that promises to redefine the future of air travel.
“It has been an exciting experience running these simulations on the world’s fastest supercomputer. This offers a unique view of the detailed turbulence physics of Open Fan as we enable more sustainable aviation for the future,” said Stephan Priebe, a senior engineer specializing in aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics at the GE Aerospace Research Center in Niskayuna, New York.
Since 2023, when GE Aerospace became the first industrial user granted access to Frontier, they’ve been using it to model engine performance and noise levels. In the process, they’re gaining insights that extend beyond the project at hand.
“Frontier is allowing us to go beyond standard engineering analysis and to do things that were impossible before this machine,” says Trevor Wood, senior principal engineer at the GE Aerospace Research Center. An expert in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, Wood lends his technical chops to the team designing, running, and analyzing computer simulations on Frontier.
The super-capable computer allows Wood and his colleagues to simulate the full-scale Open Fan engine at actual flight conditions whereas smaller computers can handle only a reduced, scaled-down version. Frontier’s capabilities also allow GE Aerospace engineers to visualize the way air flows around components at a microscopic level. These studies help accurately predict how fan blades will perform in nearly any possible real-life situation, yielding information it would otherwise take scientists years to gather.
“It’s providing us with insights even before we build components and test them on a test stand,” says Eric Falk, executive leader of aerodynamics technology and design at GE Aerospace in Evendale, Ohio. “And harder to put your thumb on is all the intellectual discovery we’re doing in the meantime. The answers we’re getting in these simulations are helping us learn things about aerodynamic behaviors from a deep physics perspective. It’s changing the way we design and changing the way we work.”
Seeing Through the Chaos
GE Aerospace’s Frontier-based projects support the CFM RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) program, unveiled by GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines in 2021. The RISE program aims to develop technologies that will help enable a future aircraft engine to achieve at least 20% lower fuel consumption and 20% fewer CO2 emissions than today’s most efficient commercial engines.
“When it comes to sustainability, the industry has aggressive goals, including an ambition to achieve net zero by 2050,” says Wood. While the team is testing a variety of RISE program components on Frontier, “we’re running [many] simulations on the fan blade because it’s such a huge driver of net efficiency.”
Simulations pave the way for creating blades that optimize aerodynamic efficiency by reducing sources of energy loss. And they help the GE Aerospace team explore one of the most constantly challenging areas of science: the complex, chaotic flow of air known as turbulence.
Large-scale turbulence creates a bumpiness familiar to anyone who’s flown in a plane. But turbulent air currents are also present at the microscopic level, imperceptible to humans but causing friction, drag, and other issues that affect engine performance and efficiency. Unfortunately, the behavior of turbulent air is notoriously difficult to predict.
“You can’t see turbulence, but simulations can help us visualize it, so we can better understand it,” says Wood.
The level of detail Frontier provides is hard to fathom. “We are simulating air flow while moving forward in time in fractions of a second, getting a read on what the flow field looks like at a scale orders of magnitude less than the width of a human hair off the wall [of the fan blade],” explains Sriram Shankaran, consulting engineer for aerodynamic methods at GE Aerospace. “Turbulence is the last unsolved problem in classical physics. We’re not trying to solve it in a universal way; we’re instead finding ways to compute our way to the solutions we need.”
The Future and Frontier
GE Aerospace’s Frontier simulations have already garnered attention from tech industry insiders. HPCwire, the leading authority in high-performance computing news, commended GE Aerospace in 2023, presenting the company with a Reader’s Choice Award for Best Use of High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Industry and an Editor’s Choice Award for Top Supercomputing Achievement.
Meanwhile, the potential for future Frontier collaborations is growing, with GE Aerospace and Oak Ridge National Laboratory announcing a new Cooperative Research and Development Agreement on supercomputing at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow this week. GE Aerospace engineers and researchers will continue to use Frontier to study Open Fan engine architecture, and future studies are likely to include climate modeling. “We want to work with Oak Ridge to see how to further accelerate carbon neutrality by understanding how contrails evolve,” says Shankaran.
The organizations will also deepen their relationship with a project that examines how simulations are conducted, looking for ways to improve simulation monitoring and data analysis. “We are taking it to the next level, leveraging the deep expertise the Oak Ridge team has developed to make our processes more efficient from a software perspective,” says Umesh Paliath, technology manager for aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics at GE Aerospace Research. “How can we get the most out of the data once a simulation is done, and while it’s running?”
Paliath oversees the company’s partnership with Oak Ridge, and he leads the team that develops GE Aerospace’s in-house software so it can be used to run simulations on Frontier. Part of his job is keeping up with supercomputing’s evolving capabilities, ensuring that GE Aerospace is always ready to take full advantage of them.
“Advancements in computing architecture are enabling significantly faster and larger simulations of the most challenging problems in science,” says Paliath. “What takes a month to do today will only take a day, and it will happen incredibly soon.”

John Deere Helps Increase Access to Higher Ed
MOLINE, Illinois (June 3, 2024) – A groundbreaking partnership between the John Deere Foundation, the University of Iowa (UI), and the Davenport Community School District (DCSD) will soon increase access to higher education for Iowa high school students.
The John Deere Foundation will give $6.6 million over six years to create the John Deere Scholars Program, a program based on financial need that will help Davenport Community High School students get ready for college at Iowa.
“We believe education is the foundation for success,” said Mara Downing, president of the John Deere Foundation. “By investing in our community, John Deere is also investing in opportunities for the leaders of tomorrow. We are excited to begin the John Deere Scholars Program and watch these future leaders achieve their dreams.”
The program will start this fall with college readiness courses for seniors from low- to middle-income families at Davenport Central, North, West, and Mid City high schools. UI will appoint a local program director to work with school counselors to teach the courses, provide training to improve leadership skills, and assist students with the financial aid and admissions process.
Then, starting in spring 2025, the program will give 20 scholarships per year for three years (60 in total), paying 90% of the total cost to attend Iowa. The remaining 10% will be paid by other funding sources, such as work-study. The first 20 scholarships will be given in spring 2025 for students who will start at Iowa that fall. Any student participating in college readiness courses through the program will be able to apply for a scholarship.
“John Deere is leading by example, showcasing how a large company can partner with a university and a public school district to address workforce needs,” said Barbara J. Wilson, president of the University of Iowa. “This is a game-changer not only for the students who will receive the education and leadership experiences they need to succeed in a global society, but also for how we develop pipeline programs in the future.”
“This partnership will provide a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said TJ Schneckloth, superintendent of the Davenport Community School District. “Our district is committed to preparing our students for their post-secondary education. The John Deere Scholars Program offers a generation changing opportunity for our students to receive the college education they might never have thought was possible.”
In addition to receiving academic, financial, and social support, scholarship recipients also will take part in specialized leadership training. This includes mentorship programs, field experience, and networking in the student’s field of study.

Whirlpool Corporation’s Strategy for Renewable Energy in Its North America Operation Puts Company on EPA Green Power List
Whirlpool Corporation’s renewable energy strategy for North American operations was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by including the company on three of the EPA’s Green Power Leadership lists. The company is No. 60 on the EPA’s National Top 100 List of the largest green power users from the Green Power Partnership (GPP), No. 14 on the Top 30 On-site Generation list and No. 34 on EPA’s list of Green Power Partners from the Fortune 500®. Whirlpool Corp. is currently purchasing more than 301 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy from renewable sources annually, which represents 86 percent of its operations’ total power needs and is equivalent to the annual electricity use of nearly 28,000 average American homes.
Whirlpool Corporation’s goal is to use onsite renewable power where possible for manufacturing sites – primarily wind and solar energy. Secondary to that, the company has invested in two virtual power purchasing agreements (VPPAs), Limestone Wind in Dawson, Texas, with 53MW of clean energy produced from 88 turbines and Mesquite Sky in Callahan County, Texas. When fully operational, the VPPAs are expected to generate sufficient renewable energy to cover 100% of Whirlpool Corporation’s U.S. sites’ electrical consumption.
“Adding clean, renewable energy to the electrical grid while helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint is an important part of our ongoing sustainability initiatives and will help us meet our Net Zero by 2030 goal for our operations,” said Beat Stocker, senior director of global sustainability at Whirlpool Corp. “We are proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for being a leader in the green power market.”
Adding clean, renewable energy to the electrical grid while helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint is an important part of our ongoing sustainability initiatives and will help us meet our Net Zero by 2030 goal for our operations,”
By moving the needle in the voluntary green power market, Whirlpool and other Green Power Partners are helping to reduce the negative health impacts of air emissions including those related to ozone, fine particles, acid rain, and regional haze.
“Onsite renewable energy at our manufacturing facilities comes with its own challenges, but it’s key to our strategy because it contributes to global decarbonization efforts while also reducing demand on local and national electricity grids,” said Scot Blommel, senior manager of global sustainability and net zero program lead for Whirlpool Corporation.
“This list of the largest users of green power across the nation is proof that good business practices can also benefit the environment,” said James Critchfield, Program Manager of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. “EPA applauds the leading organizations in the Green Power Partnership’s Top Partner Rankings for their notable commitment to expanding their use of green power and protecting the environment.”
Supported by their focus on green power, in 2023 Whirlpool Corp. saw a ~25% reduction in scopes 1 and 2 market-based emissions year-over-year for the last two years. In addition, they achieved ~7% reduction in Scope 3, category 11 emissions from products in use. Reynolds Named Recipient of SEAL Business Sustainability Award for Advanced Water Recycling Facility at Tobaccoville, N.C. Plant
Winston-Salem, N.C – Reynolds American Inc. (Reynolds), the BAT Group’s U.S. subsidiary, is pleased to announce that SEAL Awards has named Reynolds as a recipient of the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards in the Environmental Initiative Award category for the Reynolds WaterHubSM project under construction by a Reynolds subsidiary at the expansive Reynolds Operations Center in Tobaccoville, N.C. The SEAL Business Sustainability Awards honor leadership, innovation, and commitment to sustainable business practices.
The Environmental Initiative Award evaluated applicants on impact metrics, innovation and uniqueness of the initiative, sharing of insights and best practices, and investment of organizational leadership capital. Reynolds’ award-winning initiative, the WaterHub, is an advanced water recycling facility and product of a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, and one of few water recycling projects of its scale. Once construction is complete, the WaterHub is expected to reclaim more than 60 million gallons of water per year, equivalent to the annual water supply of approximately 550 average U.S. households.
“We are proud of all the efforts being made across the Reynolds American organization to preserve and make efficient use of the precious natural resources we rely on to run our business,” said Bernd Meyer, Executive Vice President, Operations, within the Reynolds American organization. “This SEAL recognition is a testament to our sustainability progress and the expected positive impact of the WaterHub, our advanced water recycling facility at our largest manufacturing facility, in collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources.”
Reynolds and its operating companies are playing a part in the BAT Group’s progress against its goal of 35% less water withdrawn across global operations. At the Reynolds Operations Center, Reynolds expects to reduce water withdrawn by over 40%, which in turn would reduce the water withdrawn across the BAT Group’s global operations by 6%.
“Absolute, material impact is a critical factor in the SEAL Business Sustainability Award evaluation process. The Reynolds American organization demonstrated strong water stewardship through its innovative WaterHub project, which is expected to reclaim over 60 million gallons of water annually, leading to their 2024 award selection,” commented Matt Harney, Founder of SEAL Awards.

Duke Energy Progress Proposes Cost Reduction In Annual Adjustment For Fuel With Public Service Commission Of South Carolina
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Duke Energy Progress is seeking to reduce customer bills to account for the cost of fuel used to generate electricity for South Carolina homes and businesses. If approved by the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC), the average monthly residential bill would decrease by 4.1% beginning Aug. 1.
The total monthly impact of these rate changes for a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month would be a decrease of $6.23, from $151.74 to $145.51.
If approved by the PSCSC, rates for commercial customers would decrease approximately 4.9% and rates for industrial customers would decrease approximately 4.4%. The specific impact to individual customers will vary according to many factors including electric usage and customer profile dynamics.
The PSCSC will consider the rates in a public evidentiary hearing where it will also hear the results of an extensive audit and inquiries of the parties involved in the case to ensure an accurate adjustment is made to billed rates.
Duke Energy Progress serves about 175,000 households and businesses in northeastern South Carolina, including Florence, Sumter and Darlington counties. The company’s other South Carolina utility – Duke Energy Carolinas – will make its annual fuel filing in July.
Why bills will decrease
Duke Energy Progress makes a fuel cost-recovery filing annually in South Carolina. The fuel rate is based on the projected cost of fuel used to provide electric service to the company’s customers, plus a true-up of the prior year’s projection compared to actual costs incurred. The PSCSC reviews fuel costs and adjusts the fuel component of customer rates accordingly.
Each year, this true-up proceeding is intended to resolve the difference between projected fuel costs and what is actually billed to the customer.
The decrease for customer bills in this year’s request is primarily driven by the decreased cost of natural gas year over year, plus a reduced true-up component since the previous fuel cost-recovery filing.
Duke Energy Progress makes no profit from the fuel component of rates – actual costs are passed through directly to customers.
Helping customers save
Customers struggling to pay their energy bills might qualify for assistance from various government and nonprofit programs for utility bills and other household expenses, or from the Share the Light Fund, a Duke Energy program that provides energy assistance. Duke Energy also offers programs and resources to help customers, as well as flexible payment arrangements to help customers experiencing uncertainty keep their accounts in good standing.
To help all customers take control of their energy use, Duke Energy offers energy-saving tips and innovative efficiency programs for every budget. For example, the Home Energy House Call is a free in-home energy assessment that provides customers more information about how they use energy and strategies to save money on their monthly bill. To learn more about these programs, visit duke-energy.com/savings.
Duke Energy Progress
Duke Energy Progress, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, owns 13,800 megawatts of energy capacity, supplying electricity to 1.7 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across a 28,000-square-mile service area in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Duke Energy
Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), a Fortune 150 company headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., is one of America’s largest energy holding companies. The company’s electric utilities serve 8.4 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, and collectively own 54,800 megawatts of energy capacity. Its natural gas unit serves 1.7 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky.
Duke Energy is executing an ambitious clean energy transition, keeping reliability, affordability and accessibility at the forefront as the company works toward net-zero methane emissions from its natural gas business by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions from electricity generation by 2050. The company is investing in major electric grid upgrades and cleaner generation, including expanded energy storage, renewables, natural gas and advanced nuclear.
GE Aerospace Launches as Independent, Investment-Grade Public Company Following Completion of GE Vernova Spin-Off
NEW YORK – GE Aerospace (NYSE: GE) has announced its official launch as an independent public company defining the future of flight, following the completion of the GE Vernova spin-off. GE Aerospace now trades on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker “GE”.
GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr., said, “With the successful launch of three independent, public companies now complete – today marks a historic final step in the multi-year transformation of GE. I am tremendously proud of our team, their resilience, and their dedication to achieving this defining moment.”
Culp continued, “Building on a century of learning and carrying forth GE’s legacy of innovation, GE Aerospace moves forward with a strong balance sheet and greater focus to invent the future of flight, lift people up, and bring them home safely. With FLIGHT DECK, our proprietary lean operating model, as our foundation, I am confident we will realize our full potential in service of our customers, employees, and shareholders.”
With an installed base of approximately 44,000 commercial engines and approximately 26,000 military and defense engines around the world, GE Aerospace launches as an established global leader in propulsion, services, and systems. The company generated approximately $32 billion in adjusted revenue* in 2023, with 70% generated by services and the strong economics of the engine aftermarket.
At the company’s Investor Day in March, GE Aerospace reaffirmed its 2024 guidance and presented a longer-term financial outlook, including expecting to achieve ~$10 billion of operating profit* in 2028. Additionally, GE Aerospace shared a capital allocation framework to invest in growth and innovation, while also returning approximately 70-75% of available funds to shareholders.
The launch of GE Aerospace represents the completion of GE’s multi-year financial and operational transformation. Over the last several years GE has taken steps to significantly strengthen the business, including more than $100 billion in debt reduction since 2018. Simultaneously, the company-wide implementation and adoption of lean and a relentless pursuit of continuous improvement in service of the customer, enabled a deep and sustainable shift in culture. This stronger foundation enabled the successful creation of three independent companies – GE HealthCare, GE Vernova, and GE Aerospace – each of which are now well-positioned to build upon GE’s history of innovation.
Holders of GE common stock were entitled to receive one share of GE Vernova common stock for every four shares of GE common stock held. For United States federal income tax purposes, the distribution has been conducted in a tax-efficient manner for GE shareholders in the United States.
Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP acted as legal counsel. Evercore, Morgan Stanley, and PJT Partners were the lead financial advisors on the transaction. The company also received legal advice from DLA Piper and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and financial advice from Citibank, The Consello Group, BNP Paribas, and UBS.

The Future Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) At Caterpillar
At Caterpillar, we’ve been developing advanced systems internally for decades. More than thirty years ago, we ran the first two prototype Cat® 777C autonomous mining trucks at a Texas limestone quarry using advanced algorithms, showing autonomous operations could improve safety and productivity.
And we’ve led the industry in autonomous fleet solutions since.
AI at Caterpillar.
Like most manufacturers, Caterpillar’s advanced computer programs and cloud computing allow our engineers to complete work in a fraction of the time it used to take. But we don’t stop there. Given our technology leadership, it’s not surprising that Caterpillar is actively pursuing AI to improve business outcomes for Caterpillar and our customers. Caterpillar Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President Otto Breitschwerdt shares, “Incorporating AI into our product development process continues our tradition of harnessing technology and innovation as demonstrated by our extensive patent portfolio.”

Machine Learning and Beyond.
Chief Digital Officer and Cat Digital Senior Vice President Ogi Redzic explains, “AI is technology that can learn, adapt, and make decisions by processing and learning from data, simulating human cognitive functions like reasoning and problem-solving. AI includes several subfields such as machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI (GenAI) – which grabs the most attention.”
Machine learning can be defined as the ability of computers to learn from experience and make decisions or predictions based on the data alone. A good example of using machine learning at Caterpillar is the area of Condition Monitoring – a suite of technologies Cat dealers use to detect and identify issues and recommend service or maintenance based on data from the machine itself.
Generative AI.
GenAI is artificial intelligence capable of creating new content, text, images, or video. It’s a step forward in manufacturing, allowing computers to complete time-consuming and repetitious tasks. For instance, Caterpillar developers use GenAI to query massive amounts of proprietary information and get practical answers without doing a deep search or spending hours reading thousands of pages of material.
Beyond our own operations, Caterpillar uses digital technologies to develop customer solutions. For example, Caterpillar’s Condition Monitoring Advisors (CMAs) monitor the state of Cat-connected assets in the field by analyzing incoming data. In the past, our CMAs had to extract data from multiple systems, perform an analysis and make a customer recommendation. Using Gen AI, the CMAs are now presented with a concise report containing data that has been automatically prepared and summarized with a recommendation already created. The CMA can then review the report and approve or edit the recommendation. There’s still a human in the loop, but the time required to prepare data and create a recommendation is significantly reduced.

New Opportunities.
Caterpillar Chief Information Officer and IT Senior Vice President Jamie Engstrom sees a wealth of new opportunities as the company adopts AI tools.
“AI will revolutionize the way we interact with machines and design interfaces between systems. It’s fascinating and changing at a very rapid rate,” Jamie says. “We’ll continue to see the industry mature, and the accuracy of technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs) will improve.”
Jamie and her team are working hard to enable a safe environment where the business can innovate and thrive. They have developed an Intelligent Automation Center of Excellence and a GenAI community of practice where employees participate in AI use cases and stay abreast of the company’s latest GenAI news.
The Future.
At Caterpillar, we’re more excited than ever about the future. Our leaders are committed to investing in AI and other technologies to maintain our industry leadership, and we have some of the best and brightest minds working on products and solutions focused on digital innovation.
One thing is certain: we’re using AI and other technologies to transform customer experiences in ways we couldn’t have imagined a few short years ago. Together with our customers, we’re building a better, more sustainable world.
